About

Cost of Repairs is an independent website that helps U.S. homeowners understand what home repairs and replacements really cost before they call a contractor or sign a quote.

Why this site exists

When a water heater starts leaking or a roofer hands you a $14,000 estimate, the first question is simple: is this price normal? Most answers online are either a single national average with no context or a sales page from a company that wants your business. We wanted a place that explains the full range, what pushes a price up or down, and when it makes sense to repair instead of replace.

What we cover

  • Water heaters: tank, tankless, and heat pump units.
  • Heating and cooling: furnaces, central air, heat pumps, ductwork, and mini splits.
  • Plumbing and sewer: sewer and water lines, septic systems, sump pumps, well pumps, and water softeners.
  • Electrical: panel upgrades, generators, EV chargers, and rewiring.
  • Roofing and exterior: roofs, gutters, siding, windows, garage doors, and chimneys.
  • Foundation, basement, and air quality: foundation repair, crawl spaces, waterproofing, mold, radon, and insulation.
  • Pests and yard: termites, pest control, tree removal, driveways, and fences.

How we work

Every guide gives a realistic cost range, the factors that change it, and the questions to ask before you hire someone. We build our numbers from public sources such as U.S. government agencies, industry associations, manufacturer pricing, and published contractor rates, and we show the date each guide was last reviewed. You can read the full process in our Editorial Policy.

We are not contractors and we do not sell repair services. Our guides are a starting point for a conversation with a licensed professional, not a replacement for one. Please read our Disclaimer.

How the site is funded

Cost of Repairs is free to read and is supported by advertising. Advertisers do not choose our topics, review our articles, or influence the numbers we publish. If we ever add affiliate links, they will be clearly disclosed on the page where they appear.
